Windows Server Migration

Summary

In this project you will build a Windows Server 2008 R2 server running Active Directory.  You will build a client running Windows 7 Professional and join it to your domain.  After that's functioning you'll build a new server running Windows Server 2012 R2 and upgrade your domain.  You'll migrate all services and data to the new Windows Server 2012 R2 server.  Once complete you will decommission the Windows Server 2008 R2 server.  During the process you'll come to a point where you'll be graded on your progress before you can proceed to the next step.  You can use this Google Sheet to grade your own process.

Setting Up ServerA

Create a virtual machine named ServerA with the following specifications:
  • Name: ServerA
  • Type: Microsoft Windows
  • Version: Windows 2008 (64 bit)
  • 2048 MB of RAM
  • 60 GB Hard drive
  • Network: Internal Network
Install Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard using P@ssw0rd as the password.  Once installed set the following settings on the server.
  • Time Zone: Eastern Time (US & Canada)
  • Set the clock to the correct time
  • IP Information
    • IP Address: 192.168.20.1
    • Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    • Default Gateway: 192.168.20.254
    • DNS: 192.168.20.1
  • Computer Name: ServerA
Install VirtualBox Guest Additions

Make ServerA a Domain Controller with the following settings:
  • FQDN: pineforest.org
  • Forest Functional Level: Windows Server 2008 R2
  • DNS Server: Yes
  • DSRM Password: P@ssw0rd
Install and configure DHCP with the following settings:
  • Scope Name: Work
  • Starting IP: 192.168.20.100
  • Ending IP: 192.168.20.150
  • Lease Duration: 8 Days
  • Subnet: 255.255.255.0
  • Default Gatway: 192.168.20.254
  • DNS: 192.168.20.1

Setting Up Active Directory

In Active Directory create an OU named "Pine Forest Users" to hold your user accounts.  Create the following accounts.
  • Mike Smith
    • Username: msmith
    • Password: P@ssw0rd
    • Password never expires
  • Ben Dover
    • Username: bdover
    • Password: P@ssw0rd
    • Password never expires
Create an OU named "Security Groups" and create a Global group named "Staff" in it.  And Mike and Ben to the Staff group.

Create a home folder location for the users with the following settings.
  • Location: C:\Shared Data\Home
  • Share Name: Home
  • Share Permissions: Domain Admins: Full Control; Staff: Change
  • NTFS Permissions: Domain Admins: Full Control; Staff: Read & Execute
Create home folders for Mike and Ben.

Setting Up ClientA

Create a virtual machine named ClientA with the following specifications:
  • Name: ClientA
  • Type: Microsoft Windows
  • Version: Windows 7 (64 bit)
  • 2048 MB of RAM
  • 25 GB Hard drive
  • Network: Internal Network
Install Windows 7 Professional using the following settings:
  • Username: admin
  • Computer Name: ClientA
  • Password: P@ssw0rd
  • Password Hint: P@
  • Time Zone: Eastern Time (US & Canada)
Install VirtualBox Guest Additions

Join ClientA to the pineforest.org domain.

Log into ClientA as msmith and create a text file in his home folder.

At this point contact Mr Hull and have him grade your progress.
DO NOT PROCEED UNTIL YOU HAVE BEEN GRADED

Setting Up ServerB

Create a virtual machine named ServerB with the following specifications:
  • Name: ServerB
  • Type: Microsoft Windows
  • Version: Microsoft Windows 2012 (64 bit)
  • 2048 MB of RAM
  • 60 GB Hard drive
  • Network: Internal Network
Install Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard using P@ssw0rd as the password.  Once installed set the following settings on the server.
  • Time Zone: Eastern Time (US & Canada)
  • Set the clock to the correct time
  • IP Information
    • IP Address: 192.168.20.2
    • Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    • Default Gateway: 192.168.20.254
    • DNS: 192.168.20.1
  • Computer Name: ServerB
  • Join Domain: pineforest.org
Install VirtualBox Guest Additions

Make ServerB a Domain Controller with the following settings:
  • Add a domain controller to an existing domain
  • DNS Server: Yes
  • Global Catalog: Yes
  • DSRM Password: P@ssw0rd

Migrate Data and Services

Install and configure DHCP on ServerB with the following settings:
  • Scope Name: Work
  • Starting IP: 192.168.20.151
  • Ending IP: 192.168.20.200
  • Lease Duration: 8 Days
  • Subnet: 255.255.255.0
  • Default Gatway: 192.168.20.254
  • Parent Domain: pineforest.org
  • DNS: 192.168.20.2
Uninstall DHCP from ServerA

Create a home folder location for the users with the following settings on ServerB.
  • Location: C:\Shared Data\Home
  • Share Name: Home
  • Share Permissions: Domain Admins: Full Control; Staff: Change
  • NTFS Permissions: Domain Admins: Full Control; Staff: Read & Execute
Copy the user's home folder from ServerA to ServerB.

Change the home folder location for your users in Active Directory to point to ServerB.

Disable the Home share on ServerA

Change the IP settings on ServerA and ServerB so they use 192.168.20.2 as their DNS server.

Remove DNS from ServerA.

Run DCPromo to remove Active Directory from ServerA, set the password to P@ssw0rd.

Remove the Active Directory role from ServerA.

At this point contact Mr Hull and have him grade your project.
